NBA 2K27 Dribble Styles Explained
2K introduced dribble styles in NBA 2K20 with a few simple options like Quick, Power and Shifty. NBA 2K23 is when the list really grew, adding the player dribble styles you see today. 2K has never really explained exactly what these dribble styles do. A dribble style is not a cosmetic animation: it decides how fast you leave a dribble move, and two builds with identical attributes can play very differently because of it.
This page covers what a dribble style does, what it does not do, and two side by side clips that show the gap between a good one and a bad one.
What a dribble style does
Every dribble style has its own animation for two bursts, and those two bursts are the whole reason to care which one you equip.
These are the two things Koza2K grades every dribble style on, 1 to 10, in our dribble rankings. They are graded separately because a style has a separate animation for each.
What a dribble style does not do
- It is not cosmetic. The style does change how your player looks bringing the ball up, and that is the part that does not matter. Underneath the look, every style carries its own launch animations, and those animations cover different amounts of ground in the same amount of time.
- It does not make you run faster with the ball. Once you are already running with the ball, a better style will not make you any faster. That is your Speed with Ball rating. Swapping styles will not win you a footrace down the floor.
What the style changes is the first step or two after a dribble move, which is exactly where a defender is either beaten or not.
Cross launch: good against bad
Same build, same move, same input. The only thing that changed between the top half and the bottom half is the dribble style equipped: Dejounte Murray on top, Austin Reaves underneath.
That is what the grades describe. Koza's Cross Launch grade for Dejounte Murray is 7 out of 10, and for Austin Reaves it is 4. In a game that gap is the difference between being past your defender's hip and still being in front of them.
Speedboost: good against bad
The second clip is the other burst: a dribble move followed by a burst to the same side, with no change of direction. Zach LaVine on top, Jalen Green underneath, same build and same input again.
Koza's Speedboost grade for Zach LaVine is 8 out of 10, and for Jalen Green it is 4. Neither player is running faster with the ball. One of them simply left the move sooner, and that head start is what a dribble style buys you.

Koza2K is one of the best dribblers in the 2K community, and he has graded every dribble animation in the game for us. That is 735 animations across 30 categories: all 39 dribble styles, plus every size up, crossover, behind the back, hesitation, spin, stepback and combo, each one scored 1 to 10.
The four styles above are a sample. You just watched what a few points of grade look like on the floor, and the same gap exists in every other dribble animation you have equipped. Premium shows you which ones are fast and which ones are costing you a step.

Two grades, not one
The two bursts are separate animations, so a style can be strong at one and weak at the other. The four styles from the clips show it. Jalen Green is the weak half of the speedboost clip with a Speedboost of 4, and its Cross Launch grades a 7. Dejounte Murray is the strong half of the cross launch clip with a Cross Launch of 7, and its Speedboost grades a 5.

So there is no single best dribble style in the abstract. There is the burst you use most, and the styles that grade well on it.
How to pick a dribble style
- Decide which burst you actually use. If your game is hitting a move and going, Speedboost is the grade to chase. If you live on crossovers and changes of direction, Cross Launch matters more. The styles at the top of the rankings grade well on both.
- Check what your build can equip. Every style has a Speed with Ball requirement and a height range, and the best style for you is the best one you qualify for.
- Get off the default. Basic grades at the bottom of the list on both bursts. If you have never changed your dribble style, changing it is the cheapest upgrade your ball handler has.
- Buy it and equip it. Purchase the style from the Playmaking animations, then equip it in your animations. Buying it alone does not apply it.
